Since Monday 24th, Acampamento Terra Livre [The Free Land Camp] is taking place in the Federal District, Brasília in what’s said to be one of the ‘world’s largest Indigenous mobilization of recent years’.
Over 3000 people and hundreds of indigenous groups with different ethnicities have traveled here across the country to come together as one to show their dissatisfaction and denounce attacks against their rights. Hand-in-hand people stand united while demontrating against the corruption and suffering of systematic attacks of indigenous populations which is threathening their lands and thereby their way of life.
Over 4000 indigenous & supporters sang, danced and empowered eachother with their faces and bodies painted while walking down the streets of Brasília on Tuesday, 25th. The goal of the march was the Congress, the main criticizm being the legislation on deciding land boundaries for indigenous reservations. As a symbolic act, 200 fake coffins where carried and set out to the fountain of water outside of the Congress for the many deaths of indigenous groups that authorithies who are allied to the agribuisness have caused. The march was mainly peaceful, but the response from the police quickly changed the atmosphere of the march when rubber bullets and tear gas was released into the crowd.
At the camp, inspirational and encouraging speeches are held daily from various ethnic leaders and organizations mobilizing the manifestation in solidarity. Traditional hand crafts are sold to the public, groups keep dancing and spreading positive energy.
It is a vibrant, revoluntionary week in Brasília.
